ZANU PF IS FALLING APART WHILE THE PEOPLE CONTINUE TO SUFFER
ZANU PF is in trouble again, but this time, the fight is not with the opposition. The ruling party is now fighting itself. The war inside ZANU PF has exposed how broken and confused it has become. What started as a simple decision to add a new member has turned into a full-blown power struggle, leaving the whole party in chaos.
The trouble began when rich businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei was added to the powerful Central Committee without following proper procedures. Many party members were shocked and angry. They said Tagwirei was co-opted unfairly. Co-option means current members bring someone new into the structure, usually by agreement or voting. But in this case, the process was done in secret and without transparency. Now the whole party is fighting over it.
The situation has become so serious that ZANU PF is now writing a new document to explain how co-option should be done. The national political commissar Munyaradzi Machacha and secretary-general Obert Mpofu are the ones trying to manage the crisis. But even they are struggling to control the anger. Some powerful figures support Tagwirei because of his money, while others reject him because they see him as a threat.
Last week, the politburo met and received a report from Machacha suggesting that Tagwirei should be accepted. No one objected, so it looked like everyone agreed. The next day, Tagwirei walked into the Central Committee meeting confidently, believing he was now part of the team. But Vice President Constantino Chiwenga stood up and ordered him to leave. That one act showed the world how deep the divisions have become inside ZANU PF.
Some say Tagwirei wants to replace President Mnangagwa or at least gain more control within the party. He denies it, but his wealth and growing influence make many people suspicious. The provinces of Harare and Masvingo supported his inclusion, saying his business success made him a good choice. But others were furious, arguing that he has no political experience and should not jump the queue just because he has money.
Harare Province managed to push his name through, but the victory did not last long. Chiwenga and his loyalists stopped the process. Now ZANU PF is rewriting the rules again because no one seems to understand what the law really says anymore. The constitution was changed in 2022 to say that co-option must happen within three months by agreement or by vote if there is a contest. But the rules are being ignored whenever powerful people want their way.
The whole drama has revealed what Zimbabweans already know — ZANU PF is no longer a united party. It is a group of greedy men fighting for power and wealth while the country continues to suffer. The roads are broken, hospitals have no medicine, and families go to bed hungry. Yet the leaders are busy fighting over who gets to sit in their meetings.
Ordinary citizens watch in silence as their so-called leaders argue about positions instead of fixing the country. The fight between Mnangagwa and Chiwenga has already divided the party, and now Tagwirei’s name has made things worse. It is clear that ZANU PF no longer cares about the people who voted for it.
Attempts to get answers from Machacha and Mpofu failed. They are quiet, hoping the storm will pass. But it will not. The truth is that ZANU PF is falling apart from the inside. The same people who destroyed Zimbabwe’s economy are now destroying each other. The cracks can no longer be hidden. The ruling party is at war with itself while the people continue to suffer, waiting for a day when real change will finally come.
